Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSC) logoMalaysia’s top rider Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin showed his mastery on a damp track as the Team Project X rider upstaged former Australian superbike champion Cameron Donald in Race 2 of the Superbike Championship in the opening round of the 2016 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) in Sepang yesterday.

Starting from third on the grid, Fuad – the three-time Malaysian Super Series (MSS) supersports champion and three-time national cub prix champion – burst into the lead to take full control of the eight-lap battle and take the chequered flag in 19 minutes 26.621 seconds.

The usually-quick Donald, who won the opening race yesterday in dominating style, struggled at the start of Race 2 on his Kawasaki ZX10R machine as he dropped to third behind Finland’s Jouni Karhu before climbing back up the time sheet to take second place.

Karhu took third in the race, which was slotted as the final event of the three-day MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship 2016 Fassi Malaysian Round, which was marked by a sensational second place finish by Malaysian hero Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin in the FIM Supersports World Championship.

In a thrilling race that saw Zulfahmi exchanging leads and fighting wheel-to-wheel with Italian Ayrton Badovini up to the finish line, the Malaysian rider was beaten by a mere 0.05 seconds on a wet, slippery track. Britain’s Gino Rea took third. The Sepang race also saw former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden scoring his first victory in the WorldSBK.

A total 23,762 spectators attended the three-day event with 12,111 coming for Race Day. Saturday recorded an attendance of 7,429 spectators with Friday’s attendance standing at 4,222 spectators.
