MUSASHi Boon Siew Honda rider, Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi, is hoping to join compatriot Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman on the exclusive list of riders to have won the SuperSports 600cc races at the iconic Suzuka Circuit. As the third leg of the 2016 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship heads east on June 3 to 6, the 21-year-old rider is banking on his winning momentum from Buriram to carry him past the expected Japanese onslaught.

“Suzuka has always been the playground of the top Japanese riders. Since the circuit joined the ARRC roster as a host venue in 2013, the only non-Japanese rider to have ever won races there was my good friend Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman,” said Zaqhwan. Winners from previous meets are listed as Shinichi Nakatomi (2013), Katsuaki Fujiwara, Yuki Ito and Yuki Takahashi.

“I have had some experience at the circuit, having raced there in 2013 and 2014, but the closest I ever got to the podium was a fourth-place finish in 2014. The local challenge is really formidable there.”

At the same time, Zaqhwan is optimistic that having a rider like Yuki Takahashi as his team mate will help improve his performance at Suzuka. “Takahashi is a Suzuka expert. I will be able to rely on his experience and tips to tip the scales on Honda’s home ground.”
