Malaysian Cub Prix Championship logoThe battle royale between Wira title favourite Mohd Shafiq Ezzariq and upcoming young talent Mohd Helmi Azman during the Temerloh Cub Prix last month had drawn a fair bit of interest among Malaysian motorsports fans. With Round 9 of the 2016 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship in the offing at Jempol this weekend, Helmi’s mentor Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin finally broke his silence to weigh in on the matter.

Helmi’s mentor Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin(left) finally broke his silence to weigh in on the matter.

“It was nothing more than a racing incident. If there were any lessons to be learnt, it is that Helmi must protect his racing lines better,” said the 3-times Cub Prix champion and IUGB AFB Tech Racing team principal.

Video footages from the previous race on September 25th saw both riders engaged in a fierce tussle for the race lead but ended when Helmi succumbed to pressure and crashed into the air fence during the closing laps of the race. The incident sparked a lively online debate between fans of both riders.

Fuad weighs into nip potential Shafiq-Helmi tiff in the bud.

“I don’t want Helmi to be too badly affected by his crash in the previous round. His focus should be on the upcoming race in Jempol which is another technical circuit. Learn the lesson and move on. Helmi is a very talented young rider who has even had exposure on the Moto3 bike when he took part in the Asia Talent Cup. But a rider cannot always rely on engine power alone to win races for him. In situations where the machines are equal and riders are scrapping for every inch of track space, the ability to know where and when to attack could tip the odds in one’s favour. Cub Prix is a good arena for young riders to hone this aspect of their race craft,” said Fuad who in 2013, won the CP130 race in Jempol despite starting from the back of the grid.
